                                        "Easter Treats"

O.k. I know it's April Fool's Day, but this picture is NOT a joke.  This is a photo of what the Easter Bunny hid for me around the house.  Yes, a bottle of wine, a 12-pack of beer, the 3rd season of "Trailer Park Boys", some poker chips, wiener roast prongs, a spooky card game, a squirrel feeder, a light stick & loads of chocolate ~ now that's my kind of Easter Bunny!

Best Childhood Memory...

The Great Blue Heron

                Blue Heron courtesy of DurhamPortfolio

When I was younger, my mom would take me out bird watching nearly every Saturday morning.  It was a very special weekly event; a chance to venture out into another world of wonder & surprise.  Even after many years of regular outings, as we drew on an informal routine, we still never knew exactly where those country roads would take us or what we would hear & see in the thick of the trees.

One time, we had been out all morning & without much excitement lurking behind the bend of our favorite road or on the branches of a well-known grove, we drove up to a particular telephone pole along a gravel path to see if we could spot the American Kestrel that often perched there, but the pole was bare.  So we drove up to a clump of poplars where we were certain to see flashes of orange from the feathers of the Northern Oriole, but as hard as we stared up from the eyes of our binoculars we only saw a few flitting chickadees.  We then diverged towards a distant marsh with hopes of spotting the Yellow-headed Blackbirds that regularly rest on the tops of cattails.  As vibrant as these birds are, it is their call that I find most exciting because it sound a lot like back alley cats scrapping over fish bones.  We waited with ears perked but alas, no luck.

We turned a corner rather discouraged & headed towards an unfamiliar pond just at the side of a quiet road.  We stepped out of the car to investigate, but nothing stirred.  Just as we were about to leave a Blue Heron, camouflaged carefully among the reeds, took off in flight...

Out of the ordinary arose the extraordinary!  It was the biggest, most surprising moment during those bird watching trips (apart from that time mom was attacked by terns).  But it was more than just a magnificent sight to behold.  I think it was right then that I felt my spirit transcend.  I suddenly believed, believed in something grander, a powerful force out there so much bigger than me, yet meticulously conscious enough to mark my own experience with a profound grace.  And from that moment on, I realized that there is always beauty around us, some days you have to go around the corner to find it & some days you have to sit really still & wait, but if you look hard enough & have enough patience, something spectacular will happen because the universe wants that for you.  Since that day, my life has been full of wonder & moments of rich beauty,  because I've made the point to stop in all this busyness to see it.  How about you?

Monday ~ April 11th (Morning)

Give this a try:

Follow the instructions as quick as possible.  You don't need to write down or remember the answers, just do the calculations in your mind & don't go the the next calculation before you have finished the previous one.

How much is:

15 + 6

3 + 56

89 + 2

12 + 53

75 + 26

25 + 52

63 + 32

I Know! I know!  Calculations are hard work, come on, one more...

123 + 5

Stop! Now quick - THINK ABOUT A COLOR AND A TOOL!  Is this what you were thinking?

Sunday ~ April 17th

Good day to you all!  A few things to mention:

First, thanks for all the name suggestions for the blue & brown beads below!  We've now got a name & I will reveal it along with the jewelry once everything is complete.

Secondly, we are having a June exhibit & sale this year.  It's going to be a very fun event!  If you live in or around the Edmonton area & want to be notified of the date & time, please email me at carrie@beadtree.net.  We'll be mailing out postcards in early June.

** I have something pretty exciting happening tomorrow morning...I'll let you in on it afterwards.  Have a great Sunday!**

Tuesday ~ April 19th

Yesterday, my mom & I were filmed for a little feature on a "Help TV" show on jewelry & beads.  It was lots of fun!  I think our clip is about 2 1/2 minutes long & it took 2 1/2 hours to film.  He had us talk about how we got into business together & what the glass beads mean to us & how much we commit to it...etc. & then I made some beads while he filmed me & my mom put a strand of beads together while he filmed her.  Then he took pictures of our beads & some of the jewelry.  At first it was a little nerve racking, but in the end I think it turned out o.k.  I guess I'll find out soon enough.  So, if you live in the Edmonton area, we'll be on Access TV (that's channel 9 for me) Thursday at 6 p.m., 11 p.m. & Friday at 12 p.m. of this week.  We'll also be on the "Canadian Learning Channel", but I don't have that channel so I'm not sure when.

Wednesday ~ April 20th

The name is revealed...

Remember this picture from last Friday?  I asked for help with naming these beads for a series we're doing for a store...well I had some great ideas from many of you -  lots of desert references, which was the inspiration for our name.  Click on the photo to see what we called it.

Thursday ~ April 21st

Old Goat...

My friend Amanda sent me this interesting quiz the other day.

Here's my results:

Based on the answers you submitted, we estimate that you will be Six Feet Under in the year 2061 and you will be 89 years old. In other words, you have 56 years left to live.  So, enjoy them.   (Amanda is going to live until she is 130!)

Friday ~ April 22nd

Happy Earth Day!

Here's some tips to treat her good:

  • Drive smarter. Try combining your errands, working flexible hours to avoid rush hour traffic & use ethanol-blended gasoline.

  • This summer, use a fan to beat the heat. A 60-watt ceiling fan costs less than $2 a month to operate, while an air conditioner can cost up to $40 a month.

  • Don't idle your vehicle. Idling for 10 minutes a day can produce about a quarter ton of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions each year & cost you about $70 in wasted fuel.

  • Measure your vehicle's tire pressure once a month. Did you know that 70% of vehicles have at least one tire that is over or under-inflated? Maintaining the correct tire pressure could reduce your GHG (greenhouse gas) emissions by at least 1/8 ton each year & save $50 in fuel costs.

  • Reduce your household waste. In Canada, about 25% of our garbage is currently recycled or composted. But studies show that much more - about 70% of our household waste could be. A family of three can reduce its GHGs by more than 1/8th ton each year by composting.  Plus, compost is awesome for your garden.

  • When buying a new vehicle, choose a fuel-efficient one. Switching from a sports utility vehicle to a mid-sized sedan will reduce your GHG emissions by 2 tons a year.

These tips were taken directly from the "One-Tonne Challenge" site.  Other good sites to visit today are the World Wildlife Fund & this site to find out more about Earth day.

Sunday ~ April 24th

I will continue to take custom orders until the end of April.  After that, I have to stop until after our show here in June & maybe even longer as I plan on taking a month off this summer to work on another very exciting project that I have been putting on the backburner for over 5 years now (more about that later).  So it might not be until August or September before I can work on orders again.  If you were interested in something in the Bead Trunk, you should contact me at carrie@beadtree.net & we can work out the details.  I'll be back in a couple of days!

And he is at the top of my list.

Happy Birthday Grandpa.

Saturday ~ April 30th

Sorry for the delay with the auction...tomorrow night FOR SURE!  In the meantime, enjoy this joke that was sent to me a while back, it's pretty funny...

Jack wakes up with a huge hangover after attending a company barbeque.  Jack is not normally a drinker, but the drinks didn't taste like alcohol at all. He didn't even remember how he got home from the party. As bad as he was feeling, he wondered if he did something wrong. Jack had to force himself to open his  eyes, and the first thing he sees is a couple of aspirins next to a glass of water on the side table. And, next to them, a single red rose! Jack sits up and sees his clothing in front of him, all clean and  pressed. He looks around the room and sees that it is in perfect order. He takes the aspirins, cringes when he sees a huge black eye staring back at him in the bathroom mirror. Then he notices a note hanging on the corner of the mirror written in red with little hearts on it and a kiss mark from his wife in lipstick!: "Honey, breakfast is on the stove, I left early to go get groceries to make you your favorite dinner tonight.  I love you, darling!"

He stumbles to the kitchen and sure enough, there is hot breakfast, steaming hot coffee and the morning newspaper.  His son is also at the table eating. Jack asks, "Son... what happened last night?"  "Well, you came home after 3 A.M., drunk and out of your mind. You fell over the coffee table and broke it, and then  you got sick in the hallway, and got that black eye when you ran into the door."  Confused he asked his son, "So, why is everything in such perfect order, so clean, I have a rose, and breakfast is on the table waiting for me?"  His son replies, "Oh THAT!... Mom dragged you to the bedroom, and when she tried to take your pants off, you screamed, "Leave me alone, lady,  I'm married!"
