Tuesday ~ February 1st

Wooh-hooh!  A brand new month & I am revved up!  I really like February because Chris & I celebrate our anniversary (tomorrow in fact) & it's also one of my dearest friend's birthday (tomorrow too) ~ Happy Birthday Lori!  I also like this month because quite often we sneak off to the mountains for a little mini vacation around Valentine's Day - I just love the mountains.  Maybe it's because I lived there for 6 months back in my early twenties & it was such an exciting time.  There's lots of transients that breeze through ~ British, Australians, Germans...etc. looking for a little work here & there.  When I lived in Banff, I met some amazing people from around the world & when I left I was spurred on to travel myself.  I also love the size of the mountains ~ they always give me a comforting feeling.  And of course the wildlife is so incredible!  I'm really looking forward to a little trip west.

I have pictures of the Corb Lund house concert - they don't do the night justice, but it gives you a little idea of what was going on.

I also pulled a name for the riddle contest - Victoria Sutton wins 3 hours of torch time with dark blues.  If you would like to be notified when I list new riddle contests please email me at carrie@beadtree.net & say in the subject line "riddle contest".

Wednesday ~ February 2nd

Right now at this very moment, if I was stuck on a deserted island with only myself & a c.d. player (& a plug in & electricity) ~ the 5 c.d.s I would want to have with me would be:

1. True Love ~ Toots & the Maytals (Very fun album to get you in the groove while you're busy building your shelter & trying to start a fire ~ you need all the extra energy you can get.)

2. American IV: The Man Comes Around ~ Johnny Cash (This particular album is one of Johnny's most depressing, but it's also really, really good & lets face it, if you're stranded on a deserted island you're going to get depressed so why not be depressed with Johnny?)

3. Badlands: A Tribute to Bruce Springsteen's Nebraska (This album has so many layers ~ Ani Difranko sings an awesome version of "Used Cars", I love the lyrics to "Highway Patrolman", "Mansion on the Hill" has a mystical resonance to it - it's all good.)

4. Has Been ~ William Shatner (I love this album because it borders on  schizophrenia.  I don't know how long I could handle this c.d. before chucking it in the ocean, but I'm willing to take my chances - "Real", "Common People" & "That's Me Trying" are frickin' brilliant! I CAN get behind that.)

5. Graceland ~ Paul Simon (I have to go with this one.  It's just one of those classic c.d.'s that you never get sick of hearing.  There are songs to sing a long too, songs to dance to and songs that just make you tap your feet without even knowing it.)

And you?

Bee Facts...

Did you know that:

  • bees have to fly 55,000 miles & visit 2 million flowers to make one pound of honey?

  • honey bees communicate by dancing!  A little waggle here & a little "bee"-bop there indicates directions & distance to food sources from the hive.

  • beekeeping was practiced in Egypt as early as 2500 B.C.

  • one pound of honey equals the life work of approximately 300 bees & a flight distance of two to three times around the earth.

  • bees don't "create" honey; they are actually improving on nectar.  The honey we eat is nectar repeatedly regurgitated & dehydrated by bees...hmm, is that too much information?

Holy Beads Batman!

Wow, I had an awesome day at the torch yesterday!  I think I worked for almost 10 hours.  I made just over 50 beads, which doesn't seem like much for that many hours but there was a lot of prep & some of the beads took a great deal of time.  It's more beads than I've made in one sitting for a long time.  I'll have 3 auctions up this week!

Rooster Facts...

According to the Chinese Calendar, if you were born in 1921, 1933, 1945, 1957, 1969, 1981, 1993, or this year ~ You Are A Rooster!

Characteristics that might describe you:

  • flamboyant & feisty, outwardly confident & charismatic, hardworking & upfront.

You may also be:

  • loyal & trustworthy, overbearing at times but brave & romantic.

And you might like:

  • Keeping fit, staying busy & focusing on your career.

You also share rooster qualities with:

  • Eric Clapton, Mia Farrow, Rod Stewart (who kind of looks like a rooster, don't you think?) & Yoko Ono.

Well, cock-a-doodle-doo.

Giraffe Facts...

                    Giraffe ~ Kenya, Africa 2003

Did you Know:

  • A giraffe’s tongue can be up to 21 inches long & is prehensile, which means it can grab & hold onto objects (Giraffe's clean their ears with their tongues).

  • A giraffe's average height is 18 feet.

  • A giraffe's heart weighs 24 pounds!

  • Giraffes usually sleep standing up because it can take too long for a giraffe to get back up on its feet if a predator should approach.

  • Giraffes begin their lives by falling 6 feet to the ground.

  • A newborn giraffe is about 6 feet tall at birth and weighs about 150 pounds ~ ouch!

  • Giraffes are one of the few mammals that cannot swim, but they can run - up to 35 miles per hour!

  • Early written records described the giraffe as "magnificent in appearance, bizarre in form, unique in gait, colossal in height & inoffensive in character."  I agree.
