This
video is fantastic & reminded me of what happened last night. I
was dreaming & in my dream Chris said something really funny. I
burst out laughing & woke myself up from it. Have you ever had
that happen? It's really weird. I
can't remember what he said now, but it was funny.
What a
stellar day - a little windy, but so warm that the tulips were
practically growing in front of my very eyes! I've been
out working in the garden for several hours & only put a small dent in
it. My hands are dry & dirty, but it sure feels good to be
pushing the soil around.
Anybody see the new
X-men movie?
I so want to go, but I'll have to wait for a rainy day...

my mom, Judy
The weekend
is here! We have our friend
Tricia,
coming for a visit. And of course this Sunday is Mother's Day & tomorrow
is my last tap recital so it should be a jam-packed couple of days.
If I don't get back here before the weekend is out, Happy Mother's Day
to all you wonderful Moms out there making this world a better place
because of the time & love you put into raising your children.
And mom, you're a sparkling jewel indeed! Thank you for being so
incredibly patient, kind & thoughtful & thank you for your boundless
love.

Our backyard gate
Hope you had a wonderful Mother's Day.
We had lunch at the horse races, which was fun but I walked away with
lighter pockets. I've got to quit picking a horse just because
it's pretty.
We've been busy in the yard too.
I'm trying to stay on top of what seems like a thousand garden beds,
while Chris is building the most beautiful gate. Here it is
above, not totally complete yet, but I couldn't resist showing a
little sneak peak. He still has to build up some panels on
the side & a pergola, & we have to plant some vines once he buries the
electrical so I'll show pictures later on when it's finished.
But, he has quite a knack with wood, wouldn't you say?
I'm going to the greenhouses every day
this week to stock up on shrubs, perennials & annuals. Time is
of the essence right now, however they are saying that we might have
snow tonight & temps are going to dip below freezing this week...
It's been a very slow Spring this year; the trees haven't fully leafed
out yet & the landscape around here still looks like winter just
ended. I'm trying very hard to be patient.
The good news about the impending bad
weather is that I'll be in making beads today & tomorrow, so there
might be something to show for it...
Wednesday ~ May 13th
That's a duck, in our yard! Last
night, while Chris was working outside, two ducks landed right near
him, a female & male mallard. They quickly mated & then the male
immediately took off (no cuddling or nothing afterwards). The
female, however, stuck around for an hour or so, perhaps stunned by
the whole thing, I'm not sure? Silly ducks!
And speaking of silly animals, have you
seen the story about the man & his cat racing? Here's the
fabulous
trailer & the
video report on it (open it up to full screen if you can).

Butterfly on verbena ~ photo courtesy of my mom, Judy
It's too cold to plant this long weekend.
We'll have some nice weather, but come Monday & Tuesday, more freezing
temperatures so I'll take care of all my soil issues this weekend
instead. Get the pots all ready to go & fill the shed roof with
a special soil mix & order in some good garden soil for a few areas
that need topping up.
Chris wants to set up the tent in the
backyard & camp out. I'm not brave enough to endure the low
temperatures we're expecting at night so he might be camping solo.
If it rains on Sunday, I'm hoping we'll have time to go and see the
new Star Trek movie.
Hope you have a wonderful long weekend!
P.S. Mom, check out
these guinea pig coats, definitely the skull & crossbones
for Dr. Snuggle Pants.

Sssally the duck
~ photo courtesy of my mom, Judy
The duck came back yesterday. She
gobbled up some seed near the bird feeder & then waddled over to the
grass for a little nap in the sun. We named her Sssally (said like
Daffy Duck would say it) & called in our expert photographer,
my mom, to snap a nice shot of her. My mom actually paints
mallards so Sally might make it into an art show one day.
I woke up this morning with
this song in my head, weird.
Tuesday ~ May 19th
10 a.m.
It's snowing outside... sigh. We're
expecting 10 to 20 cm of the white stuff today.
I took pictures this morning, but I just
can't bare to post them. I'm so over it! I want to be
walking around in my garden seeing what's popping up in the soil while
enjoying the warm breeze, but instead I'm inside wearing my sock
monkey slippers & I just turned the furnace up a notch. It's a
good day to make beads, that's for sure.
The duck, Sssally, is back. She
comes everyday now to snack at the base of the bird feeder. I
think because it's been such a late Spring, she has had to resort to
our feeder for a little sustenance. It's still a bit strange to
see her mingling with the sparrows & the pigeons.
Have you heard that we might lose our
local television stations, including our local news?

about it here & help save it by signing the petition.
Later ~ an update on the snow...
Snowflakes in the yard
this morning
It wasn't nearly as bad as they
predicted. The snowfall warning was lifted by noon & we only saw
big, chunky flakes that quickly melted into the ground. With a
little heat, things are going to really green up around here!

A stunning
Rose-breasted Grosbeak ~ photo courtesy of Surfbirds
I am having such a great day, in the face
of all the menial, household tasks I'm doing.
Maybe it's because it rained this
morning, which is far better than snow & makes everything smell & look
so fresh outside.
Or maybe today is so great because the 8
trees & 9 shrubs I ordered from my
favorite greenhouse just arrived intact & the weather is
supposed to be beautiful this weekend, perfect for planting cedars &
columnar crabapples of which I have a lot.
Or maybe it's because between running
laundry upstairs & cleaning out the litter box & garbage cans, I
stopped to look out at the bird feeder & found an unusual sight.
That of the most handsome Rose-breasted Grosbeak, which I've never
seen before in my life, let alone at our bird feeder! I watched
him until he flew away, paralyzed with excitement, so I didn't get a
picture, but he looks like the bird above, although even more
beautiful, if you can believe it.
But I think it's a great day because I
just found out that two very special people, Rosie & Matt had a baby
boy yesterday & I'm so overjoyed for them.

We went to a big birthday bash out in the
country on Friday night to celebrate our niece, Sunshine & nephew,
Jeffy's birthdays. The best part was when a fire truck pulled up
to make sure that the fire we were having outside wasn't too big,
since a fire ban was just lifted the night before. Once they
noticed everything was fine they asked if the birthday boy & girl
wanted a ride in the fire truck. They were a little too scared
to go (they're just little after all), but we did get a photo of them
& the kids got to explore the truck. How cool is that!
The rest of the weekend, we spent in the
yard working. I planted & cleaned garden beds on Saturday for 12
straight hours. The time just flew by, and though my shoulders
are a bit sore now, it was one of the best days I've had in a a long
time. I sure do love being out in the sunshine, mucking about in
the dirt. Sunday was much of the same & I hope to get most of
the planting done this week. I have to take advantage of these
warm days for the garden, but I'm hoping to make beads at night when
the temperature cools off a little.
