Tip: If you don't have a compost box in your backyard you can always dig a deep hole in your vegetable bed (after harvest) and dump your kitchen scraps in it. Backfill the hole and you'll have some great compost next year. Thanks for the tip Elle!
Tip: Garden bean plants are a very rich source of nitrogen for your garden. After the plants have gone to seed and begin to die you can help with nitrogen fixing by working the entire plant back into the soil - leaves, stems & all! Thanks for the tip Vicki!
Tip: If you have clay-like soil and you want to change the composition of it by adding sand, think again. You should know that most sand mixed in with a tough soil will create concrete - yikes! (think of adding marbles to a barrel of basketballs, not a lot of room for air). The rule of thumb is to always add larger particles to your soil than what exists. Sand is great, but you need to mix large, coarse sand granules usually found at any greenhouse.
Tip: If you want to add those gorgeous allium heads to your bouquets, add a drop of bleach to a glass of water & let cut allium sit for 5 to 10 minutes. This will remove the garlic smell! Thanks Catherine McGill! |
