Anniversary Trip to Jasper ~ February 1-3, 2007 |
Chris & I at the train station. We got there at 8 a.m. because they told us to be an hour early. We didn't leave until 10:30 a.m., the train being late, which I guess is a regular occurrence, so we entertained ourselves by playing a weather game we made up. I had a list of all the temperatures around the world from the newspaper. I would call out a name, like "Sydney" & Chris would have to guess exactly what the temperature & conditions were for that day. The best was when I said, "Winnipeg" & Chris replied, "-37 C & a blizzard". We laughed for about 10 minutes straight. That's a little Canadian joke that Winnipeg has the worst weather in the world. Though he meant it as a total exaggeration, it was -29 C & drifting snow there so he was close. He eventually nailed it with Boston, "-2 C & cloudy". We actually had a lot of fun at the station, I think because we were so giddy with excitement. |

Wooh-wooh, we're on the train and another train is coming our way. The ride was a blast! We spent the whole time in the "games car" where we had our "First Annual Crib Tournament". It was intense ~ tied two for two, I just squeaked by to take the Championship! Better luck next year Chris. |
The train ride was over 5 hours long & it took us the whole trip to play 5 crib games because we were easily distracted by the beautiful scenery.

In Jasper, we stayed at the Jasper Alpine Inn, which turned out to be a wonderful hotel. We were given the Elke Sommer Room ~ this is a section of our room. There was also a king size bed, a jacuzzi & a bottle of champagne in the fridge ~ sweet. It's named the Elke Sommer room because she stayed there for several months back in the 90's while they were filming the Canadian television series "Destiny Ridge". We really didn't know who Elke was until we came home & googled her. Turns out she was quite the actress back in the 60's & has made 99 movie & television appearances. |

The first night we went on a moonlit tour of Malign Canyon. We walked along the bottom floor of the canyon, which is filled with water during the summer, but freezes in the winter. Our guide, Jeff said he once saw a complete fish frozen in a sheet of ice down there - cool. We saw some awesome ice waterfalls, like the one above & filled our bottle full of cold, glacial water. Some of the water is fed from underground too & as you walk you can here gurgling & water flowing beneath you. |
It was a beautiful night with no wind & a full moon. |
The next day we went on a guided snowshoeing trip. On the way up to Malign lake we spotted this moose who was standing in the middle of the road licking the salt off the pavement. She's pretty but not too smart, eh? It was a thrill nonetheless to see a moose up so close - she inspected our van for a good 15 minutes, licked the tires & eventually moved on. There was a Scottish Dad & his daughter on the trip too & it was a lot of fun to experience it with them - they were over the moon about the moose. |
I'm taking a picture of our guide, Brenda who is at the back. She's explaining something about the trees, I can't remember what it was now, but she was an excellent guide who stopped a lot to tell us cool little tidbits about the region. She was also always looking for fresh tracks & wildlife. She said that in the last week they had seen a pack of wolves, but we weren't so lucky spotting them. The company we did both tours with is Beyond the Beaten Path & I highly recommend them if you're in Jasper. |
Chris asked me if this was my "artsy" shot. Not really, although that's funny. I just wanted to share the type of snowshoes we wore. These are the traditional style. There's a newer style that looks a lot different, but they're not great for deep snow, & we were in deep snow most of the time. |

A final shot of the sun lighting up the mountains. We went for dinner that night at Andy's Bistro - some of the best food we've ever eaten, so again, if you're in Jasper, I highly recommend trying out his restaurant.
Saturday morning, we spent a little time in town before boarding the train again & heading back to Edmonton. What a wonderful trip! Chris & I both feel rejuvenated. |
